    Critical Care Unit with eICU

A 6-bed critical care unit provides onsite, around-the-clock care for critically injured and ill patients. The effectiveness of this local care is significantly enhanced through Sutter Health's electronic intensive care unit (eICU). Sutter Health is the first health care system in the western United States to implement this technology that enables highly qualified critical care physicians and nurses to examine, diagnose and monitor ICU patients in real time from a remote location.

Independent studies indicate that the involvement of a physician specializing in critical care increases the probability of surviving life-threatening episodes.

    Diabetes and Nutrition Education

Led by a nationally recognized diabetes educator and specially trained staff of nutritionists, SAH's Outpatient Diabetes Education and Clinical nutrition Center helps people with diabetes and their families understand and manage this life-threatening disease. Services include training in the use of blood sugar testing equipment, diet and exercise, food shopping and symptom control. The program also offers Sweet Success, special education and counseling for pregnant women.

SAH's Outpatient Diabetes Center also hosts a Diabetes Fair that offers free blood-glucose and hemoglobin AIC testing for more than 200 participants each year. The fair provides an opportunity for local residents to talk to vendors about personal blood sugar testing equipment, insulin pumps, dietary supplements and other products.

The Diabetic Youth Summer Camp Program is another community service coordinated by the hospital's Outpatient Diabetes Center. Funded by vendors of the Diabetes Fair and gifts from the community, this program pays for young people with diabetes to attend summer camps designed for their special needs and provides an opportunity for them to meet others struggling with the challenges of living with diabetes.

    Diagnostic Imaging

Some of the most dramatic advances in medical technology are occurring in the areas of diagnostic imaging and SAH's Radiology Department houses some of the best. This technology helps physicians diagnose and treat illness and injury and provides patients with the convenience of receiving these tests within the community.

In 2006, SAH replaced film imaging with 100 percent digital imaging technology. This allows greater clarity of images and provides physicians and nurses with on-demand digital images in real time.

Along with X-ray, fluoroscopy, IVP procedures and swallow studies, other services provided are:

    • A fully digitalized mammography room -- making SAH among the first hospitals to offer this level of diagnostic testing in Northern California.
    • Permanent, on-site resonance imaging (MRI).
    • Nuclear medicine.
    • General and diagnostic cardiac ultrasound.
    • 16-slice CT scan with enhanced cardiac capabilities, virtual colonoscopy and improved vascular imaging.
    • Bone density testing equipment

    24-Hour Emergency Services

SAH's Emergency Department is open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. It is staffed by a team of dedicated emergency physicians, experienced nurses and other specially trained medical professionals. Patients of the Emergency Department benefit from the use of an electronic health record (EHR) that allows physicians and nurses to spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients. The hospital's heliport ensures that patients can be brought in from remote areas or transferred out quickly for specialty care. Emergency patients are treated in the order of the seriousness of their condition.

Patients will less serious conditions, but still requiring immediate attention can choose the Fast Track program. The program is designed to provide quick, convenient and quality treatment during peak hours to non-emergency patients.
