The centers are certified by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS). ACOS defines what services must be provided in order to earn the title of "Comprehensive Cancer Center." The ACOS criteria include:

• Advanced diagnostic techniques (including MRI, PET, etc.)
• Chemotherapy
• Radiation therapy
• Surgery by cancer specialists
• Physicians specializing in cancer treatment
• Nursing and support staff specializing in cancer treatment
• Dedicated cancer unit in the hospital
• Clinical trials and research into new cancer treatments
• Support groups and social services
• Home care services
• Complementary medicine services
